Cloud Cost Anomalies: Detect Problems Before the Invoice Arrives
Unexpected cloud spend can grow quickly. Cost anomaly detection helps teams identify unusual spending patterns early and investigate the resources responsible.

Cloud cost problems often appear gradually
Cloud infrastructure is dynamic. New resources are created constantly. Applications scale. Teams experiment. Traffic changes. Because of this, unexpected spending can begin at any time. Waiting until the monthly invoice arrives means a cost problem may have been running for weeks.
What is a cost anomaly?
A cost anomaly is an unexpected change in spending compared with normal behavior. It could be:
- a sudden increase in compute cost
- unexpected database growth
- unusually high network charges
- a new resource generating significant spend
- a workload that stopped scaling down
- abnormal storage growth
The important word is unexpected. A large increase caused by planned business growth may be completely normal. A smaller increase in an inactive environment may be much more important.
Static budgets are not enough
Budgets are useful, but they usually operate at a higher level. For example, a monthly cloud budget may be $100,000. An unexpected workload could start generating an additional $300 per day. The organization may remain below the monthly budget for weeks while the unnecessary cost continues accumulating. Anomaly detection focuses on behavior rather than only absolute thresholds.
Compare current behavior with historical patterns
Effective anomaly detection establishes a baseline. It looks at normal spending patterns for a resource, service, account, application, or environment. When current behavior differs significantly from the expected pattern, the system can flag it for investigation. This allows teams to identify problems earlier.
